International Academy for Case Studies

The Journal of the International Academy for Case Studies (JIACS) is sponsored by the International Academy for Case Studies (IACS), an affiliate of the Allied Business Academies. The Journal is published by Jordan Whitney Press, but the Editorial Board is appointed by the IACS and the Board exercises control over the editorial content of the Journal. The Journal is currently published three times each year. Authors of manuscripts are invited to make direct submissions at any time. In addition, the Journal encourages participants in Allied Business Academies conferences to submit their manuscripts for accelerated review. The current time for review of a direct submission is approximately three months. The current time for review of an accelerated submission is one month.

The JIACS is a double blind, peer refereed journal which publishes the following case related material:

  1. Classroom teaching cases, with Instructor's Notes (IN), on subjects which are taught in Business Schools and related disciplines. Cases may be drawn from field research and must include publication permission (a release to publish) from an appropriate officer in the organization. Cases may also be drawn from library research, public or published sources. Finally, hypothetical cases may be designed by the case writer to illustrate a specific point or problem or to facilitate student mastery of concepts and must be identified as such in the abstract and IN. All cases must be accompanied by Instructor's Notes, and both the case and the note are published. The mission of the journal is to expand the boundaries of case teaching by supporting the exchange of case teaching materials. Its current acceptance rate for manuscripts is 15%.
  2. Critical Incidents. Short cases (1-2 pages in length) that typically would be a lead end at the beginning of a book chapter or a summary case at the end of a book chapter. These cases have similar requirements as longer cases denoted above.
  3. Interviews. Interviews with established Case Instructors and Case Writers who share their insights into the art and science of case teaching and case research. Should be no more than 10 pages in length and include a release from the subject.
  4. Debates. Similar to interviews, debates should involve two well-established case instructors and/or researchers and could include topics such as "do we really need IN's if instructors disregard them?" or "Should instructors be the sage on the stage or the guide on the side?". Should be no more than 10 pages in length and include a release from the subjects.
  5. Articles on Case Instruction and Instructional Case Writing and Research. Quantitative as well as qualitative manuscripts are being solicited that further the knowledge and practice of the case method of writing and instruction. Articles should adhere to APA format and be no longer than 15 pages in length. Of particular interest are articles that examine the role of case instruction and case research in meeting supra-accreditation (i.e. AACSB, IACBE, etc.) standards.
  6. Book Reviews and Commentaries. Critical commentary on published texts and journal articles on case instruction and case writing and research. Should be no longer than 5 pages in length and adhere to APA format.

More details on the types of manuscripts published and the categories of research accepted are displayed in the Journal Matrix section of this website. Authors who would like to discuss the potential for editorial board interest in a manuscript may contact the Editor by email.

Individuals interested in becoming members of the Editorial Board should contact the Executive Director by email. The Journal is interested in expanding its Board and solicits inquiries.
